The presence of drugs in hair is based on a simple principle. Drugs that are taken into the body circulate in the bloodstream and nourish developing hair follicles. As a result, trace amounts of the drug or drug metabolite are deposited in the hair follicle and become trapped in the hair shaft as it grows out. By testing for the presence of drugs at various levels in the hair shaft, an accurate result can be obtained as to how much of a particular drug has been used historically. Since drug or drug metabolite residues are chemically and structurally stable, they cannot be easily washed, bleached or flushed out of the hair structure. Consequently there is little possibility of sample contamination or manipulation. Forensic laboratory analysis achieves highly accurate hair drugs test results and provides a historical record of use over several months. Testing for date rape drugs

Date rape drug refers to any drug that can be used to assist in the commission of a sexual assault, such as date rape. Drugs used to facilitate rape may have sedative, hypnotic, dissociative, and/or amnesiac effects, and may be added to a food or drink without the victim's knowledge. The term "date rape drug" has its origins in journalism and has no strict scientific or legal definition. A wide variety of substances can be used to incapacitate a person, and people in other situations have sometimes taken all of them willingly.

Two drugs often referred to as date rape drugs are GHB, also known as gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, and benzodiazepines (such as flunitrazepam, also known as Rohypnol or "roofies"). However, an American 1997 study showed that alcohol, not Rohypnol, still remains the drug most frequently implicated in substance-assisted sexual assault.

Rohypnol can incapacitate victims and prevent them from resisting sexual assault. It can produce anterograde amnesia, which means that individuals may not remember events they experienced while under the effects of Rohypnol. The sedative effects of Rohypnol begin to appear approximately 30 to 45 minutes after the drug is ingested. The effects of Rohypnol typically last from four to eight hours after administration of the drug, but some cases have been reported in which the effects were experienced for twelve or more hours after administration.
